Ou Ma was one of the 6 designers
that was chosen from the top fashion schools for the annual Supima Design
Competition. This competition is to giving emerging designers to showcase their
talent on the runway at the NYC Fashion Week.
These competitions have given
exposure and propelled now top designers such as Karl Lagerfeld and Yves St.
Laurent in the past. Ou Ma was selected from her top design school in New York
City, Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) to be one of the 6 contestants to
design eveningwear gowns.
Her gowns were enchanting with
shades of blues and white that presented her undeniably talent and her future
success in the fashion industry with her designs. We are so honored to have the
opportunity to interview such a designer with immense capacity to make a stamp
on the fashion world as we know it. Let’s get started with the interview with
Ou Ma!
Untouchable Collection NYC Fashion Week
Ou
Ma
PQ: The designs of your eveningwear
gowns at NYC Fashion Week were absolutely stunning and entrancing; what gave
you inspiration to create and come up with the choice of design and colors for
the Supima Design Competition?
Ou Ma: The capsule collection for the Supima Design
Competition was a continuation of my senior collection at FIT. It comes from a
private personal experience- an unexpected accident that interrupted normal
life and distorted healthy and beautiful skin. By breaking down the long and
unstable healing process into several stages, this collection explores deeply
the status of mental disturbance and the infinite progression of emotional
recovery. Starting from free-formed yarns, engineered prints and loosely painted
patterns were applied onto Supima cotton fabrics. Pleats, tucks, flares were
all created base on the nature of the fabric and to follow the shape of a
woman’s body. Tense and gathered, but loose and relaxed- well combined design
details also represent the complex yet spontaneous everyday life.

PQ: What did it feel like having
your line displayed on the runway in one of the top fashion shows in the world?
Ou Ma: It was such an amazing
experience seeing my creation coming down the runway of New York Fashion Week.
I have worked very hard for the past three months with all the design ideas and
craftsmanship. I thought through every single detail on each garment and spent
so much time working on them. My works deserved to be shown to the industry in
this grand platform and it was a dream came true!
PQ: What is the name of your line
for the eveningwear gowns that you designed for the Supima Fashion show?
Ou Ma: It is called ‘Untouchable’.
PQ: You just graduated from F.I.T.;
what is next for Ou Ma in the fashion industry?
Ou Ma: I am now working at Ralph
Lauren Women’s Collection and I love what I am doing in the company. I would
love to have my own line in the future and create a world for my customers.
PQ: We were only allowed to see your
talent as far as eveningwear gowns; how would you describe your designs and
portfolio?
Ou Ma: I was specialized in knitwear
at FIT but I have passion for all kinds of designs. Fashion is not
just storytelling to me; it is more about a style that reflects life. Organic,
feminine, and comfortable are always the core spirits to my design, combining
with intricate touch of sophistication, chic, and modern. I have always stayed
true to myself and also created a lifestyle that can be connected to others.

PQ: When did you decide that you wanted to be a fashion designer and what inspired you to do so?
Ou Ma: I was born to be
attracted to art. I started sensing for color when I was very little by exposing
to different art books, especially Marc Chagall and Vincent Van Gogh’s
artworks. Throughout the years I grew up, I spent so much time sketching and
playing with my Barbie Dolls. Not just making clothes, but created stories and
adventures for them. I have accomplished a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology in
Communication University of China before my journey in Fashion but I have
always known fashion is what I wanted to pursuit in life. And what I have read,
seen, felt, and experienced made me the person and designer I am today.
PQ: Who are some of your top fashion
designer inspirations?
Ou Ma: Madame Grès and
Alexander McQueen are all-time inspirations.
PQ: What do you do to stay motivated
and up-to-date with the ever so changing fashion trends and style?
Ou Ma: Along with following top
designers in the industry and fashion trend forecasting, I always keep my mind
open to different sources of inspirations. Always looking up to new things and
innovations and always renewing myself and pushing myself to the next level.
Design can only come from the heart, not anywhere else.
PQ: Are you currently working on a
line that we will be able to see in the near future and if so when and where?
Ou Ma: I am start working on my own
line in the near future and hopefully it can be seen next spring on my own
website.
PQ: What is your favorite type of
fabric to work with and why is it your favorite?
Ou Ma: I love working with knits and
I never got tired of creating my own fabrics. I love to work with something has
texture and also comfortable to wear.
PQ: What are your designing
essentials that you can’t live without?
Ou Ma: Everything I created means
something to me. I will still doing the same thing in the future.
PQ: Where can we see more of you
online such as website or social media?

now, which is ouma-nyc.com and you can also follow me on Instagram: @ouma429.
