Day 1 NYC Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2015 Supima Design Competition

Supima was one of the many amazing shows yesterday at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week on day one; showcasing beautiful talent from up and coming designers. The host was the one and only Coco Rocha with her stunning bob haircut and winged eyeliner. She looked like straight out of the era of 70's glam and a little Pulp Fiction-esque. This show was a competition of 6 designers, displaying beautiful evening-wear. Let's get into what this competition is a all about.

ABOUT THE DESIGN COMPETITION
Supima is America’s luxury cotton. Founded in 1954, the Supima brand designates an elite variety of Pima cotton grown only in California and the southwestern U.S. is prized the world over by designers and retailers who value its luster, strength, and superior softness.
The annual Supima Design Competition was created to give runway exposure to emerging talent and was modeled after the legendary 1954 Wool Secretariat competition that launched the careers of the then-teenaged Yves St. Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld.
Six of America’s top design schools (AAU, FIDM, FIT, Kent State, RISD, SCAD) are asked to select one finalist from among their graduating seniors. Each finalist is asked to create a capsule collection of women’s eveningwear gowns from premium Supima denims, knits, corduroys, twills, and shirting.
A prestigious panel of judges decide the winner at a full-fledged fashion show held during New York Fashion Week at Lincoln Center. The winner is announced at the completion of the show and receives a $10,000 cash award.

The winner of the competition was Anastasia Lafrate with stunning gowns that brought out deep purples and pumpkin orange with flowing cotton. These gown are literally cotton and you would never know from afar. She used beautiful black lace detail to add to the beautiful designs.

One of my all time favorites of the whole competition was designer Ouma with her soft blue ice fractal like design on her gowns. The designs reminds me a little bit from the movie Frozen, a dress that would be perfect for Queen Elsa. Her designs were fairytale like with icy blues and whites scattered throughout the entire collection. I thought for certain that Ouma would be the winner because her designs were so elegant and there was a degree of separation from the rest of the competitors.

The whole collection from the six designer surpasses impressive and I'm sure these are designers to keep an eye out for since we only go to see their talent as far as evening-wear deign. What did you think of the Supima Design Competition?
